The Summer is over and monsoon is here. Mumbai’s had it’s first rain of the season few days back.Image

It’s almost irresistible to not go out and get soaked in the rain, isn’t it? I love doing that.

Come monsoons and the hair problems begin. I have compiled a list of tips to keep hair healthy during the monsoons.

Keep heating products to a minimum – Curling, straightening etc. dries out the hair. If you wish to color your hair try to wait and do it after the season is over. If not then treated hair need special care, use a mild shampoo and conditioner. Try the L’Oreal professional range, Schwarzkopf Professional Anti frizz products or Kerastase Nutritive Bain Oleo-relax Smoothing Shampoo.

Shorten your hair – Now is a good time, you want a change in hair style go for the short hair cut. They are more manageable in the rains.

Natural Products – Use homemade hair packs and natural conditioners. Curd, eggs, mayonnaise make very good conditioners. Rinsing hair with apple cider vinegar or beer (fresh or flat) also helps. Just use 1:1 ratio of water and apple cider vinegar and rinse the hair followed by a water rinse after 5 minutes.

Oil your hair – Hot oil massages are very effective. Keep the oil in the hair for 1 or 2 hour before a wash. Do not go out in the rain with oiled hair. That will just attract dirt and grime and lead to infections. Coconut oil or olive oil are good choices.

Wash hair regularly – Hair should be washed every 2-3 days to keep it clean. Rains water invites a lot of infections.

Tie hair Loose – When you are out in the rains, tie the hair in a loose pony tail or a loose bun so that it does not retain rain water.

Stay healthy – Eat lots of protein rich food, include nuts (especially walnuts), whole grains in your diet and drink plenty of water.

Hope the tips help you. Happy Monsoons!
