Daily Prompt: Travel

Daily Prompt: Trains, Planes, and Automobiles

You’re going on a cross-country trip. Airplane, train, bus, or car? (Or something else entirely — bike? Hot air balloon?)

Photographers, artists, poets: show us TRAVEL.

Making a list, charging the camera, packing the bags and setting the alarm for an early wake up. I am always charged up at the thought of travel.

Whenever I see a long distance bus loaded with passengers and their mineral water bottles and luggage I wish I am one of them, about to go for a trip.

I have done a lot of traveling in a bus. Staying up through the night, listening to music and watching outside the window. The road, the stars and the moon traveling with me. It is one of those rare times when I am awake for the sunrise, to see the sky change colours. Stretching my legs during fuel refills, having some tea and chips during the halts. Some people can sleep continuously on the bus, I think they miss all the fun.

As a kid I used to travel often by train with my mom. Long rides of 16 hours from Mumbai to Delhi on Rajdhani Express. It was the fastest train available on that route that time ( i think it is even now). I remember being at the Bombay Central Station (now called Mumbai central) eying the book stalls for comics. I read many namely Chaha Chaudhari, Tinkle – my favorite, Champak etc. For music I had my faithful Sony Walkman Cassette player and some extra rechargeable batteries. I could not sleep in the night during travel then as well. There wasn’t much to see outside, the windows were shaded and it used to be pitch dark save for some twinkling lights every few minutes.

Every time I travel by train I am transported back into time and I remember these journeys.

Daily Prompt : Rain

Daily Prompt: Singin’ in the Rain

Safe inside, toasty warm, while water pitter-patters on the roof… describe your perfect, rainy afternoon.

Photographers, artists, poets: show us RAIN.

The Journey

A long winding road, lush greenery on the sides, flowing mist and soulful music playing. We were traveling with friends to a farmhouse. Laughter is everywhere. I open the windows and the wind is in my hair.

Someone spots a waterfall on the way, as if the rain wasn’t enough, we go towards it hungry for more. The water is cool and refreshing.

A little stop on the way for food and everyone is full and happy. We make a move from there and soon we reach our destination.

The journey is more important than the destination.

Sunshine In The Rain

It’s a gloomy day, I put on my favorite dress and perfume. We have decided to meet in the coffee house today. I look outside the window, the clouds are big and gray, foretelling rain. I quickly pick the umbrella and head out for the coffee house.  It’s a swank place opened recently, lovely furniture and decent coffee.

Lots of tables are empty when I get there and I go for the one near the wide french window. Soon it begins to rain heavily and people start pouring in. The smell of freshly brewed coffee fills the place. I look at the watch, he should be here anytime now. The rain drops on the window makes it difficult to see outside.  All I can see is colors but there is no sight of him. What is talking him so long? Just then the door bell tinkles and it’s him at the door. My sunshine in the rain. It warms up the place and my heart.

Edible Lip Scrub Recipe

Exfoliation of lips is as important as moisturizing them.

Why bother to buy expensive lip scrubs when you can make one at home? Its cheap and extremely easy so lets start :

What will you need?

  • 1 tsp Sugar (granulated or crushed)
  • 1 tsp Honey
  • 1 drop Vanilla essence
  • Mixing bowl and a toothpick
  • Small lip balm container, emptied and sterilized (dip it in boiling water)

Mix all the above ingredients together in a bowl and fill it in your favorite small container. I like to make this in small quantities as I have to dip my fingers in the container to use the scrub. It smells really nice, the sugar does the exfoliation and the honey will moisturize the lips besides you don’t have to worry about it accidentally getting into your mouth because it is edible too 🙂

Rub the scrub on your lips and then wipe it off, don’t wet your lips first because the sugar granules will dissolve. Follow with a lip balm. Enjoy smooth lips in a jiffy!

You can experiment with this recipe by replacing vanilla with peppermint oil or other food flavors that you like example: pineapple, strawberry etc.

A non-edible variant of this scrub is to use Vaseline petroleum jelly instead of honey.

Tips To Reduce Lip Pigmentation

I love wearing lipsticks and experimenting with a range of shades especially pink. When I was new to makeup I would often buy lipsticks and would be disappointed when it wouldn’t turn out the same way as the swatches or in the pan. That is when I realized that the problem is with my lips and not the product. I have pigmented lips and that means most light shades look terrible on me. After some searching on the internet, I found quite a few tips that would help me.

Here I have complied a list of tips to reduce lip pigmentation, how to cover up pigmentation by makeup.

Tips to reduce lip pigmentation:

  • Sun Protection: Not just your skin but lips needs sun protection too. Use a lip balm with SPF to reduce pigmentation due to sun damage.
  • Moisturize: Moisturize the lips always. I cannot stress this point enough. Licking your lips will make them dry, don’t do that.
  • Remove Makeup: Remove lip makeup at the end of the day.
  • Exfoliate: I know this is sounding like basics of skin care but these are applicable to lips as well. Remember do not exfoliate too much, lips skin is sensitive. If lips are cracked avoid exfoliation.
  • Expired Products: Check the expiration date on your lip products. Expired goods can cause a lot of damage.
  • Tea/ Coffee Consumption: Avoid excessive tea and coffee. I am a tea addict and this one is really tough for me.
  • Smoking: Smoking causes pigmentation of lips, remember nicotine stains!
  • Biting Lips: Avoid sucking, biting of lips that basically cause lips to become dry and chapped which results in pigmentation.
  • Vitamin B: Include Vitamin B in your diet. Deficiency of vitamin B is known to cause pigmentation.
  • Hormonal Changes: Hormonal changes are a big cause of pigmentation of lips and skin. See a Dermatologist if simple remedies don’t help.

Some home remedies to reduce pigmentation:

  • Apply honey or glycerin and lime juice overnight. Lime juice is natural bleach and honey moisturizes the lips.
  • Apply a mixture of castor oil and lime juice overnight. If you cannot bear the smell of castor oil overnight, keep it for 30 minutes and then wash it off.
  • Rose water and glycerin is a great combination to get natural pink lips.
  • Overnight application of beetroot juice also helps.
  • Diluted clove oil heals chapped lips and has pain numbing and antiseptic properties. Remember it has to be diluted otherwise it can sting. It gives a warm sensation when applied. Olive oil can be used to dilute clove oil.

Makeup tips to cover pigmentation

  • Layer the lipstick: Apply a coat of lipstick, then blot it with a blotting paper or tissue paper and then apply another coat of lipstick. This also helps making the lipstick last longer.
  • Use a Lip liner: This helps in covering the pigmentation on the rims of your lips. You can use a nude pencil rather than using a different one for each colored lipstick.
  • Nude lipstick Base Coat: Just as it says use a base coat of a nude lipstick and apply your lipstick on top.
  • Use Matt Lipsticks: Matt lipsticks are better in coverage rather than the sheer ones or glosses. If you like gloss, use opaque ones. Example:  NYX lip creams, Chambor lip glosses.
  • Use a concealer: My favorite method to hide pigmentation is to use a concealer first before applying lipstick or gloss. Concealers are drying in nature hence use a lip balm underneath. Mac has a special lip concealer for this purpose: Mac Lip Erase. It has concealer plus lip balm. Although I find it expensive and a regular concealer can get the job done.

I wanted to put some before after pictures but I am not feeling very brave right now!

Hope this post helps you.

Daily Prompt : Take Care – Small Battles

Daily Prompt: Take Care

When you’re unwell, do you allow others to take care of you, or do you prefer to soldier on alone? What does it take for you to ask for help?

Photographers, artists, poets: show us HELP.

Awkward is what I feel if I have to ask for help from someone other than my husband. If I am offered help I take it, easily.

When I am sick, I would go to the doctor myself, sleep most of the day. Put off the chores and order some food.

What I need help with is taking medicines. I hate taking pills. I keep staring at the pills as if they will disappear if I stare harder and delay taking them till there is nothing else left to do.

It’s worse if there are several pills. I take them one by one then I am full because I had so much water, a good excuse to take some time off from taking more pills 🙂

My happiness is always short lived, I have to take the next pill and I tell myself its will be over soon. Put on some music to make myself happy. As soon as one pill goes down my throat I run as fast as a sick person can to the fridge looking for something to get the taste or smell off my mouth. My fridge is mostly understocked so I resort to sugar. In case you are wondering, it works.

Phew! one small battle is over. Relax till the next one is close.

Ripped Into the Headline : Delightful Surprise

Daily Prompt: Ripped Into the Headline

Write about something that happened over the weekend as thought it’s the top story on your local paper.

Photographers, artists, poets show us something from your WEEKEND.

Mumbai gets it’s rains around the 10th of June and this time it decided to surprise us and come early.

Crazy pouring rain pattering away on tin rooftops of shops, making small puddles on the road. The aroma of hot pakoras and steaming cups of chai.

A change in climate, a change in clothes, colorful umbrellas mushrooming everywhere, people scattering for cover, trees bursting with new life…

Me cooing with my baby just like the cuckoo bird, coo coo.

RSVP : It’s A Party

Daily Prompt: RSVP

Plan the ultimate celebration for the person you’re closest to, and tell us about it. Where is it? Who’s there? What’s served? What happens?

Its a party! What are we celebrating? Do we need a reason to celebrate? Its a weekend and my friends are free so we are having a get together.

There are about 20 people gathered in my small apartment. Its dark outside so we have put on the soft yellow lights, the special Diwali rustic lamp I like is lit in my room.

Parties should be fun and so we decided to have a theme to it. Today’s theme is Wine and Jazz. We play the music and people get their own wine.

Friends start arriving one by one, each carrying a bottle of wine. The music is playing, its not really jazz just some lounge classics but people hardly notice that as they are busy talking! Everyone is scattered around in small groups.

There is finger food on the table and soon it is all gone so we bring out the delightful pineapple cheese cherry served on ice and its an instant hit. Food that tastes as good as it looks! The wine is poured, glasses clink and there is a happy cheer in the air.

The music changes to house and people get up to dance, some are content just tapping their feet. Then more food is served, chicken starters and biryani. Some of us are getting lazy and sleepy especially the ones who went to work that day. The volume is turned down low and Hindi film music is playing. Someone in the room starts singing and others join in. The party goes on…

Its always fun when friends are around.
